Aim	1)Nurture a variety of viewpoints required to grasp & solve environmental problems. 2)Nurture problem-solving skills through cutting-edge cases of the coexistence with environment and making an Action Plan (AP) framework.

GP : 1) Orientation (Day1)

Orientation

19 participants which had been selected in 6 ASEAN countries gathered together in Indonesia, and the GP started. Firstly, each participant and DYEA staff introduced themselves, and later we shared the environmental problems of each country.

Mr. SHINTANI (facilitator) explained the learning points to participants, and they were very excited about the starting GP.

Discussion

Participants exchanged opinions about their focuses (interests), hearing the views of experts (DYEA staff) in the field. It gave us a sharing place on how to think among participants and staff, and we also could relax ourselves.

GP : 2) On-Site Training I : Environmental Conservation Activities in Pulau Seribu Island (Day2-3)

Coexistence between sea and people "Conservation of the ocean, fishing method and educational activities by NGO, government and local people"

It took about hour to get to Pulau Seribu Island from the port by boat. Participants learnt environmental conservation activities here. They cultivated understanding of the activities and its efforts of TERANGI (local NGO),listening to explanation of the staff.

【Environmental conservation activities in Pulau Seribu National Park】

In the Pulau Seribu National Park, fishing method gave priority to the fishing hauls by using firecracker and medicine is one of the factors which destroys a marine ecosystem, and it has led to the reduction of aquatic resources and　people’s poverty.

In order to improve the vicious circle, government and TERANGI (local NGO)are promoting environment-friendly fishing method by community participation, environmental conservation activities (coral transplanting, mangrove afforestation and sea turtle protection, etc.), environmental education activity, and eco-tourism, cooperating with local people.

After the lecture and visit to the community, participants conducted activity for transplanting coral in the sea, and they came as a fresh reminder that conserving the sea was important by becoming close to the beautiful ocean of Pulau Seribu.

【 Comments from participant 】

Singapore is a country of the limited natural resources, and I had a good opportunity to see the actual situation without appearing in the school textbooks. I have transplanted coral in the blue and beautiful sea with many living things, and also wished to conduct the biodiversity conservation activities. (Singapore)

On the 3rd day, participants visited to the community, and they exchanged opinions with NGO, government and local people working to solve environmental problems in the area. The eco-tourism project was introduced by stakeholders as follows: “This gives us an opportunity to feel natural beauty, and this approach leads to have local people improve their livelihood”. The participants could learn more on coexistence of environment and economy throughout the discussion.

They also have realized how hard it is to solve problems such as coordination of stakeholder interests and the needs of benefit to have local people participate, and this gave them a chance to improve their Action Plans, too.

• The environmental problems in Indonesia have dilemma such as interests by the wide range of stakeholders, and I have noticed that there were many complicated elements to solve them. (Indonesia)

GP : 3) On-Site Training II : CSR Activities by ASTRA Group (Day4)

Coexistence between river and people "River conservation activity through reducing banned dumping of waste by local people and recycling garbage"

ASTRA group is a partner company of DENSO Indonesia, and participants learnt its CSR activity (※). Firstly, participants went down a river by boat, and grasped the actual situation of banned dumping of garbage scattered along river bank.

(※)ASTRA group has supported "the river conservation activity" and "reduction of garbage and recycling activity" as a part of CSR projects. The banned dumping of waste by local people is being brought about disruption of ecosystem, water pollution and flood. In these circumstances, Jakarta Green Monster (NGO) promotes educational activities on garbage management and recycling etc., cooperating with government and local people.

After visiting the site, participants conducted the production activity of the charcoal fuel made from garbage, and recycling activity by making a compost. We are looking forward to seeing how these efforts will go in the future. Moreover, Jakarta Green Monster (NGO) focuses on the afforestation activity along river bank, and the memorial tree planting was conducted by participants, having a desire that we all would like to gather together here a few years later to see the clear river.

As a program coordinator, I took up CSR activities of the ASTRA group, which is a partner company of DNIA and is the largest company in Indonesia, and set up this plan.
The ASTRA group is supporting to contribute to the issue solution on local environment as a company. Every year, many DNIA staff participate in the river cleaning activity. This time, we all conducted memorial tree planting, and please come back to Indonesia again in near future.

GP : 4) On-Site Training III : Successful Case of Fair Trade by NGO (Day5)

Coexistence between forest and people Making a better life for villagers and forest conservation activity by product development in which the blessing from wood was harnessed

In the on-site training III, the participants learnt fair trade activity by NTFP. A staff of NTFP explained business purpose and organization to them, and they learnt process on how to make products in the villages and marketing strategy for selling. After the lecture, they visited to the shop of NTFP, and there were those who bought fair trade products at high quality.

The local people is trying to improve their livelihood conducting aggressively forest conservation activity, by making products with community resources and blessings from forest, such as using rattan which grows more easily and producing organic honey etc.

GP : 4) On-Site Training IV : CSR Activity about DNIA / Factory Tour (Day6)

On the final day, participants entered the meeting room of AP presentation in DNIA, and received greetings from the president and local staff. They visited DNIA factory after the company’s introduction and CSR activities on environmental conservation were explained. They observed a product line, a training site of DENSO staff and effluent treatment facility. President Minato told participants message of having a wish to lead Asia by themselves.

GP : 5) Brush up AP and its presentation

Brush up AP

The 2 tutors (2010 DYEA participants) introduced their AP. The participants learnt some points for making AP throughout their presentation. They brushed it up with the guidance of DYEA staff. They revised whether the outline of AP was logically come up with or not, reflecting the learning in the GP. Some participants didn’t have enough feasibility to implement AP and changed it drastically. Others faced multiple barriers in conducting it and had trouble in making it up until late at night.

• Creating benefits to local people.
• Feasibility (Not have a dream finish in the desk plan, but understand actual situation).
• Making network (Not think by myself, but involve more people and organizations).
• Keeping a balance between economy and environment.

Presentation

In the action plan presentation meeting, each participant presented AP and shared it each other, exchanging comments and Q&A. They had a good opportunity to increase the feasibility of their AP.

GP : 6) Feedbacks (Thanks word from DYEA secretariat)

We have held the GP in Indonesia for the first time, and we could create the excellent program in this year, thanks to many cooperators. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you. We appreciate that participants could understand the main message of the program, learning and considering themselves as well as getting the given assignment done. Introductory

The DENSO Youth for EARTH Action (DYEA) 2011 local program held in Thailand by DENSO International Asia Co., Ltd. (DIAT) and supported by WWF Thailand with purpose to foster and encourage youths who are aware of environment to understand the local environment problem and learn how to solve with focusing on hands-on learning. Not only trained them on environmental issues, we also developed their skills on analysis, logical thinking, planning, leadership, team player, communication etc. as we believe these are the fundamental basic that they could utilize to extend their abilities and knowledge.

The training was held on August 23-26, 2011, with 18 participants covering university students and working people that learned, discussed and exchanged their opinions with experts, community people and DENSO staff that gave most satisfied result at end of the program especially we can make network of new youths who truly contribute to the sustainable development society.

August 23, 2011
Day 1: Orientation, briefing and starting to learn

In the morning,18 participants had assembled at DENSO (Thailand) Co.,Ltd., Samrong plant, and were briefed on DENSO both global and local perspective especially DENSO CSR resulting in DYEA as a key activity. Mr.Masao Suematsu, Executive Vice President and COO, DIAT, gave welcome and opening remark and everybody requested to give self-introduction and passion on environment in order to know each other. After that, we moved to WWF’s learning center located in Petchaburi province, around 210 KM. far from Bangkok, surrounded with natural sea atmosphere including the communities.

When we arrived WWF, ice-breaking activities were conducted to mix the participants into one as to have them ready to learn or work as group. Skill development called “Wood Tower” was held to let them learn on planning, team working and problem-solving. And then we moved to The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park to learn on environmental issues especially preserving energy through 8 learning exhibition ie. current environment situation in Thailand, how to save energy in daily life. This exhibition interested participants since they were interactive and multimedia which were easy to understand and learn.

After visiting such the park, the students, again, were challenged with skill development activity called “Labyrinth” requiring them to analyze, plan, work as team and appreciate achievement that was from truly collaboration from everyone.

Ending the first day with lecture and role play game on environment, the visiting professor from Chulalongkorn University encouraged the participants with game allowing participants to understand that environmental problems would impact and link to one another such as human neglect would cause global warming to climate change to desertification or flooding to disease. Resolution required us all people in the world to start solving by now.

August 24, 2011
Day 2: Understanding the different aspects of the neighbors’ environmental ways

Starting with the morning activity “Bird Watch,” the participants experienced noticing living animal like birds sharing the earth with us that gain their understandings that we human did not own the earth but just only one of the members.

Key day’s activity was local community survey with purpose to let participants learn, understand the neighbors’ ways of protecting environment or worth using natural resources in order to create sustainable society. Participants were divided into 5 groups to explore the 5 neighbors’ areas; 1. Thailand’s King Rama XI’s old palace (currently is tourist attraction located in same area of WWF) 2. the nearby beach 3. The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park (learning another aspect from day one; promoting alternative energy) 4. the forest near WWF’s learning center and 5. the local community, by learning local natural resources, identifying problem and how to solve then they exchanged their studies and enjoyed discussion on how these neighbors could successfully harmonize and help protect their area and create the sustainable development society.

In late afternoon, the participants had chance to survey the nearby beach to learn its ecology and discussed what they found from the beach and how they were linked to the natural system.

As same as previous day, the training ended the day with skill development activities linking to local community survey and beach survey activities.

August 25, 2011
Day 3: Field trip and making individual action plan

Leaving Pecthaburi province to Ban Khok-kham village, Samutsakorn province, around 40 KM. far from Bangkok, for on-site training with a successful self-reliance and sustainable development village. The participants admired the efforts of this fisherman village who used to face decreasing of fish due to over fishing and serious coastal erosion problem. With never giving up mind, the village people collaborated and tried solving without waiting from slow governmental aid. They have been putting bamboo sticks to reduce sea wave power and planting mangroves to help reduce such the power and recover the forest for nurturing food chain to make fish and marine animal increase. The participants also experienced planting mangrove with the village people too.

For afternoon session, the participants returned to DENSO (Thailand) Co.,Ltd., Samrong plant, to develop their action plans with guidance and advices given by DENSO and WWF staff. Experiencing from the hands-on learning inspired them to create their own plans with variety ideas for family, community and university level.

August 26, 2011
Day 4: Getting into DENSO Environmental Management System and presenting individual action plan

In the morning session, the participants had chance to learn about DENSO Environmental Management System (EMS) the courtesy lecture given by management and staff of DENSO (Thailand) Co.,Ltd., Bangpakong plant, located in Chonburi province, 60 KM. far from Bangkok, and then they had visited the factory including the environmental projects such as biogas one produced from the left over food and leaves from gardening to utilize its gas for cooking or waste water treatment with fishing pool as indicator showing DENSO’s determination to protect the environment.

For the afternoon session, each participant was requested to present its action plan to a panel of judges from both DENSO and WWF. Questions were raised for clearer plan and advices were also given by the judges to make the plan more effective. Finally, 3 finalists selected as the representatives from Thailand to participate the global program of DYEA in October 2011, Indonesia.

July 5th 2011
Day 1 – Orientation and briefing
Understanding the DYEA roles on environmental issues

20 youths had gathered at DENSO Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Bangi, Selangor to participate in the local DYEA program. They were shortlisted from more than 50 applicants, comprised of youths from local universities and working groups; and from various disciplines. The participants were brief on the current environment condition and also their individual action plan which they need to present on the last day. The ice breaking and role play session challenge and reflect the participants’ capacity in decision making for environmental purposes.

July 6th 2011
Day 2 – Plant Tour and visit
Systematic approach in managing environmental issues by DNMY & government bodies

Participants were introduced to DENSO Malaysia Environmental Management System and were given first-hand information during a factory tour to witness environmental activities undertaken by the company. They show so much interest and eager in asking question to the DENSO officer. Moreover, they were familiarized with the DENSO Spirit.

The participants were also given a tour at Department of Environment (DOE), where officers from the department introduced them the government initiatives and plan to lead the country towards realizing sustainable society. Throughout the program participants were taught on how to identify environmental issues surrounding them and action they could initiate in their own community through collaboration with local stakeholders such as the authorities, NGOs or the community themselves. There was an active dialogue took place among the participants with the DOE officer.

July 7th 2011
Day 3 – Field trip activity
Experiencing environmental issues faced by local communities/problem solving

Field trip to Kuala Sepang for mangrove plantings and beach cleaning was amongst the most exciting and informative activities commended by the participants since most of them never experienced it before. The biodiversity of the fauna and flora, and the mangrove preservation activities by Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) were truly amazing. However, the enormous deterioration and destruction of mangrove forest in this area due to human activities and pollution is equally a cause for concern. Apart from that, they learned the steps in water monitoring by examining the ph level of the water to know the level of the water contamination. This activity had really opened up the participants hearts on the importance of preserving and conserving the nature for our next generation.

July 8th 2011
Day 4 – Individual action plan presentation and evaluation
Summary and presentation by participants

On the final day of the program the participants presented their action plan to a panel of judges comprising members representing MNS board and DENSO Malaysia Management. It was the moment where the participants purposed their environmental project and vision. Most of the participants were able produced a reflective and comprehensive ideas that suggest for an affirmative action in managing the environmental issues at their local community. The ideas that were presented to the judges ranging from environmental education, recycling activities, promotion through social networking, trees and mangrove planting, emission reduction, and beach cleaning. Finally 3 participants were selected to represent Malaysia in the global program scheduled to be held on October 2011 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Venue: DENSO MANUFACTURING VIETNAM CO., LTD.(DMVN)

10 young people from Vietnam participated in the 3day training program focusing on group work for cultivating ability of identifying environmental issues in the communities.

On the first day, the president of DENSO MANUFACTURING VIETNAM CO., LTD.(DMVN) gave an opening address, and then participants presented their Action Plan (AP) framework following self-introduction. After their presentations, DENSO staff explained the outline of DYEA program to participants, and they prepared themselves for the program.

Some of participants commended; We understand that DENSO think a great deal of fostering youth to realize quality and safety which is absolutely essential for supplier of the automobile products.

On the second day, participants discussed facilitator to find their environmental issues and make idea real, seeing a video of activity on eco-tourism. Next, they broke up into 3 groups to exchange opinions on how to approach their environmental issues. Later, they started developing their APS after followed small discussion groups.

On the third day, manager of Personnel and Administration of DMVN gave participants lecture on CSR activity, and they learned CSR case study in DMVN. One of participant suggested that my university students should be interested in CSR activity, and we want to cooperate with DMVN. Next, the facilitators advised participants on developing their APS, and they brushed it up.

In the afternoon, the screening for advancing to GP held in October was conducted. A total of 4 panel members including board members from DMVN selected 3 persons of 10 participants.

This LP program was short training for only 2 and a half days, but the participants had a great opportunity to develop a network among them, learning how to find and solve environmental issues in the communities.

Schedule: 20 – 22 July 2011
Venue: DENSO International Asia Singapore (DIAS)

A total of 10 people: 5 young people from Singapore and 5 young people from Indonesia participated in the 3day training program, focusing on group work for cultivating ability of identifying environmental issues in the communities.

On the first day, Ms. Lim (DENSO International Asia Singapore (DIAS)) and Ms. Kawade (General Admin. Div., DENSO CORPORATION.) gave an opening address, and then participants presented their Action Plan (AP) framework following self-introduction. After their presentations, DENSO staff explained the outline of DYEA program and CSR activity of DENSO to participants.

On the second day, participants did group works. They classified environmental issues of their interest, and then put them on the poster and gave a short presentation. Later, they developed their AP after followed small discussion groups.

On the third day, the screening for advancing to GP held in October was conducted. A total of 7 panel members including board members from DIAS selected 3 persons of each country.

This LP program was short training for only 2 and a half days, but the participants had a great opportunity to develop a network among them, learning how to find and solve environmental issues in the communities.

Venue: PHILIPINNE AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENTS, INC.(PAC)

10 young people from the Philippines participated in the 3day training program focusing on group work for cultivating ability of identifying environmental issues in the communities.

On the first day, the president of PHILIPINNE AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENTS, INC.(PAC) gave an opening address, and then participants presented their Action Plan (AP) framework following self-introduction. After their presentations, DENSO staff explained the outline of DYEA program to participants, and they prepared themselves for the program.

On the second day, participants broke up into 3 groups, and they did group works. They classified environmental issues of their interest, and then put them on the poster and gave a short presentation. Later, they developed their APS after followed small discussion groups.

On the third day, safe environmental manager of PAC gave participants lecture on CSR activity, and they visited eco-park in the company. Some of them commented; “We understood that PAC played an important role on social contribution activity in the communities, including environmental conservation. “ Next, the facilitators advised participants on developing their APS, and they brushed it up.

In the afternoon, the screening for advancing to GP held in October was conducted. A total of 6 panel members including board members from PAC selected 4 persons of 10 participants.

This LP program was short training for only 2 and a half days, but the participants had a great opportunity to develop a network among them, learning how to find and solve environmental issues in the communities.
